Most gated communities have an emergency gate entry code that EMS, Police, and Fire Department are aware of (or at least dispatch is and they advise them). Some gates have something similar that are at stop lights to alert the stop light that an emergency vehicle is approaching and the lights in the opposite way all turn red so the emergency vehicle can continue in a safer way. In the manner of gates, it senses the emergency vehicle and will open automatically. Some fire departments have "Knox boxes" located on the fire truck. This is a lock box in the fire truck that is opened by dispatch by a set of tones. The lock box contains a set of keys which will open another box at the premise (ie..apartment complex gate entry) and therefore giving the firefighters access.
