Gated communities

Gated communities are neighborhoods completely enclosed by walls, with an electronic gate being the only entrance. In order to open the gate, a person must type a code into the pad at the gate.

Many gated communities are not built to keep people from breaking in, as they sometimes tend to lack any manned security or surveillance, but to prevent people from accidentally wandering into the enclosed area. Some people just prefer privacy a gated community offers and trustworthy neighbors.

Often, the electronic gate from the gated community is actually made up of two gates, one that lets people in after they type in the password, and another gate that opens automatically for people exiting the community. Each gate is wide enough for a single car to drive through. A  mailbox is usually installed outside the gates.

Many gated communities actually leave their gates open during certain times of the day, or only keep the gates closed at night.
